Fasteners & Pipe Fittings Guide

Marine Fasteners & Pipe Fittings Guide:

Grades, Coatings & Thread Standards

Bolts, stud bolts, and high-pressure pipe fittings onboard commercial vessels face aggressive salt spray, vibration, and thermal expansion. Sourcing standard commercial hardware instead of marine-grade stainless or high-tensile alloy steel leads to seized threads, galling, gasket blowouts, and Port State Control detentions. Use this technical reference to select the correct fastener grades, protective coatings, and pipe fitting thread standards before requisitioning engine room and deck hardware.

1. Marine Fastener Material Grades & Corrosion Resistance

Grade / Material Standard Designation Tensile Strength Corrosion Resistance Typical Shipboard Application IMPA Reference
A2-70 (AISI 304) ISO 3506-1 / DIN 933 700 N/mm² Moderate (Pitting in stagnant seawater) Accommodation fittings, electrical boxes, internal engine room outfitting 69 01 xx
A4-70 / A4-80 (AISI 316) ISO 3506-1 / Marine Grade 700–800 N/mm² High (Molybdenum added; resists chlorides) Weather deck hardware, hatch covers, cargo manifolds, sea chest grates 69 02 xx
ASTM A193 B7 / A194 2H Alloy Steel (Cr-Mo) 860 N/mm² (High-Tensile) Low (Requires PTFE, Xylan, or Zinc coating) Boiler flanges, steam lines, main engine exhaust manifolds, valve bolting 69 11 xx
PTFE / Xylan-Coated B7 Fluoropolymer Coated 860 N/mm² Exceptional (Resists salt spray & chemical wash) Offshore topsides, subsea piping, splash zone flanges, ballast pumps 69 13 xx

2. High-Pressure Marine Pipe Fittings & Thread Standards

Fitting Type / Standard Thread / Connection Type Rating / Class Sealing Mechanism Common Shipboard Use IMPA Reference
Forged Steel Screwed (ASME B16.11) NPT (American Tapered) 2000# / 3000# / 6000# Thread interference (Requires PTFE tape / paste) Fuel oil booster units, purifier lines, high-pressure instrumentation 73 01 xx
BSPT / BSPP (ISO 7-1 / ISO 228) R / Rc (Tapered) or G (Parallel) Class 150 to Class 3000 Taper thread engagement or bonded seal washer (G thread) European & Asian engine cooling, air control circuits, bilge pumps 73 03 xx
Bite-Type Tube Fittings (DIN 2353) Metric Compression (LL, L, S series) Up to 630 bar (S Series) Cutting ring (ferrule) bite into OD of tube Hydraulic deck machinery, steering gear lines, governor air lines 73 15 xx
Socket Weld (ASME B16.11) Fillet Welded Joint 3000# / 6000# / 9000# Welded seal (Leak-free) Thermal oil transfer, high-pressure steam drains, toxic cargo vents 73 05 xx

4. Fastener & Fitting Sourcing Checklist

To prevent quotation delays and ensure 100% fitting accuracy, confirm the following 6 points before requesting quotes:

  • Thread Compatibility: Never mix NPT (60° thread angle) with BSPT (55° thread angle). Forcing them together strips the threads and causes high-pressure hydraulic leaks
  • Stud Bolt Length vs. Machine Bolt: When ordering flange bolting, specify full-thread stud bolts with two heavy hex nuts (ASTM A194 Grade 2H or Grade 8) rather than hex head machine screws to ensure uniform gasket compression.
  • Anti-Seize & Galling Prevention: When installing A4-70 or A4-80 stainless steel fasteners into stainless flanges, specify nickel-based anti-seize paste to avoid severe cold-welding (thread galling)
  • Mill Certification: For high-pressure fuel, thermal oil, and steam bolting, ensure EN 10204 Type 3.1 Mill Test Certificates are requested to verify material chemistry and heat treatment.
